Artist Statement

Textiles surround us in our everyday lives. They are inherent to the construction of our identities, which in turn shape our understanding of the world. As an artist, I am interested in the woven structure and its potential for communicating and obscuring meaning through the embedding of images and messages into cloth. I am interested in language and question how coherence between intended and communicated meaning can be maintained. Through my weaving I aim to deconstruct the process of communication, examining how messages can be lost entirely in the multi-layered process of understanding. My work examines the process of communication through woven pieces that play with language, filters, understanding, expression, and of course cloth. Many pieces incorporate texts painted directly on the warp and then woven to create blurred messages. Treating the threads as canvas I pre-paint the warp and, at times, the weft threads prior to weaving in order to intertwine and enmesh different messages and images. Using jacquard techniques I have also integrated text into weavings to communicate both textual and visual messages.
