Bio

Born in Toronto, Caitlin Erskine-Smith has studied art and design in Europe, South America and at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Building on these experiences of intercultural dialogue and divergence, she is particularly interested in the use of the spoken and written word and the way in which intended and communicated meaning can be estranged. Focusing in textiles, her work incorporates traditional techniques to consider modern conflicts of identity, language, and change. With a particular interest in public engagement through art, she has run workshops on art, worked as a Weaving Animator to educate and generate interest in the craft, and worked in a public school using art to engage children around issues of peace. Since returning to Toronto in 2008, her work has been exhibited in various juried exhibits.
